Fresh off of their 2020 offering Adult Themes, El Michels Affair is back with a new full-length release. Titled Yeti Season, this newest album has everything we’ve come to expect from EMA’s patented cinematic style of instrumental soul music. In the run up, we were given a glimpse of the album with a handful of singles, some of which featured the bollywood-inspired singer, Piya Malik. Perhaps the slowest song on the new record is 'Lesson Learned', making the listening a blissfully tranquil snippet of time. The track opens with an impressive, yet modest spin on the drum kit, followed by blizzard synth sounds and a rooted bass line. The guitar plucks echo American folk music, whilst the piano sets the tone for tragedy. Mirroring the main piano hook, brass is used to create a sense of optimism, which is quickly withdrawn when the instrumentation falls back into its old melancholic ways. 'Lesson Learned' is a sonic journey that constantly unravels, full of surprises. Yeti Season is out via Big Crown now. -Ellie Rose-Davies
